Combat Robot talk:Community Portal

We really need Community Portal, Main Page (or at least its discussion page), Current Events, and a slew of other pages which are locked for edit back up and wiki'ing! The issue (correct me if I'm wrong) appears to be spam. I'm no programmer type, but I have glanced at the WikiMedia Combating Spam Manual and I'm wondering; is there anything that can be done to reduce the annoyance to the admins and loss of functionality such as requiring a Captcha or importing an IP list? If that sort of stuff has already been tried and/or just doesn't work or requires an army of dedicated admins worth of upkeep or whatever, then we should seriously all buy Pfizer stock. I'm not much for coding or setting up php or the like, but I'd sure love to be able to contribute to Current Events or some of the other pages we've had plagued with spam. --Mooreshire 00:02, 19 September 2010 (PDT)

Agreed. I have sysop rights to the wiki, but do not have server FTP rights to update the wiki software or install Captcha or other anti-spammer measures. Judge Dave owns the URL and has the keys to upgrades, but he's a very busy fellow. I think we're stuck with what software we have. If there are specific pages you find that are locked down and need to be opened for more general editing, let me know. I'll open the Community Portal and Main Page discussion back up and we'll see what happens... Run Amok 15:57, 19 September 2010 (PDT)

Gotcha... much appreciation and respect to Judge Dave for providing hosting. In the hypothetical event that an opportunity to perform maintenance at that level becomes available, we should also get set up to allow infobox templates as I think they could help make the site sexier and user friendlier. For now though, someone could start by unlocking Motors so I can give it some brief info to go with those links (at least one of which is pointing to the wrong spot). I'll work on some of my ideas for Current Events, Main Page and the like in my user space and propose and/or implement them as they come into fruition. --Mooreshire 00:24, 20 September 2010 (PDT)

Apparently I'm a sysop now. I'll try and live up to the responsibility. :-) --Mooreshire 14:28, 20 September 2010 (PDT)

Four Hundred and Thirty Three spam edits in the last eighteen hours or so!?!? I feel bad, but I can't keep up. :( --Mooreshire 16:51, 21 April 2011 (PDT)
