Weight

Jump to: navigation, search

As any high school physics teacher will tell you, weight is not the same as mass. Mass refers to the resistance of an object to acceleration. Weight refers to the gravitational force exerted by one object (like the earth) another object (like your robot). This is why it is said that an object would weigh less if on the moon, but the mass of the object would not change.

In robotics, weight is important when it comes to weight classes and when calculating the maximum amount of friction that will accelerate a bot. Mass is critical in the calculation of energy contained in a kinetic energy weapon.

Units of weight include the pound, ounce, and newton. Units of mass include teh kilogram, gram, and slug.
